- Hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons are the same things.
- They are tropical storms.
- This means they all occur roughly within the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
- But they are called by different names at different places.
- They are called hurricanes when they form over the North Atlantic, central North Pacific, and eastern North Pacific.
- When they develop over the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean, they are called cyclones.
- And when they develop in the Northwest Pacific, they are called typhoons.
- Once a spiralling tropical storm reaches maximum sustained winds of 74 miles (119 kms) per hour or higher, it is then classified as a hurricane, typhoon, or cyclone.
