What is the difference between a hurricane, cyclone and typhoon?

  1. Hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons are the same things.
  2. They are tropical storms.
  3. This means they all occur roughly within the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
  4. But they are called by different names at different places.
  5. They are called hurricanes when they form over the North Atlantic, central North Pacific, and eastern North Pacific.
  6. When they develop over the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean, they are called cyclones.
  7. And when they develop in the Northwest Pacific, they are called typhoons.
  8. Once a spiralling tropical storm reaches maximum sustained winds of 74 miles (119 kms) per hour or higher, it is then classified as a hurricane, typhoon, or cyclone.
