- There are various theories on how the company got its name & logo.
- The ones given below have contributed in some form, and unlike other theories, these have been confirmed by official sources.
- Name Theory 1: Steve Jobs loved apples.
- Jobs was on a fruitarian diet and had come back from Oregon in the US after spending some time at a place he called an ‘apple orchard’.
- Steve Wozniak, the co-founder, was driving Steve Jobs back from the airport when Jobs suggested the name “Apple Computer” because it was fun, spirited and not intimidating.
- This story is captured in Steve Jobs’ biography by Walter Isaacson.
- As per the book Apple Confidential 2.0, both Wozniak & Jobs tried other names, such as Matrix Electronics & Executex, but only Apple stuck.
- Name Theory 2: An apple helped Newton discover gravity.
- Steve Jobs held Isaac Newton in very high regard, and the original logo of Apple Computer Co. featured a picture of Newton sitting under an apple tree.
- Name Theory 3: The name ‘Apple’ put the company ahead of ‘Atari’ in the phonebook.
- In the 1970s, companies often chose names to appear near the front of the phonebook, as then the customer could find them with the least effort.
- Steve Jobs mentioned in a 1980 interview that he chose Apple partly because he loved the fruit and partly because the name Apple got them ahead of Atari, the company for which Steve Jobs once used to work.
- Logo Theory: The bite was intended to show the size of the apple.
- The logo designer, Rob Janoff, said in an interview that the bite was added to show the size of the apple, to make it clear that it was an apple and not a cherry or some other fruit.
