Why the “F” and “J” keys on keyboards have raised horizontal lines?

Reading Time: < 1 minutes
  1. The F and J keys on the keyboard have small little horizontal lines under the letters.
  2. These lines are there to help the users locate the correct keys without having to look at the keyboard.
  3. These lines (or ridges) are meant for the users to place their hands in the optimal typing position.
  4. In the optimal typing position, the index fingers should come on “ridged keys” – the left on “F” and the right on “J”.
  5. The remaining fingers of the left-hand cover “A” (little finger), “S” (ring finger), “D” (middle finger).
  6. While the remaining fingers of the right-hand cover “K” (middle finger), “L” (ring finger), and semi-colon/colon (little finger).
  7. Both thumbs rest on the space bar.
  8. Other adaptations have also been tried in the past to increase the accuracy and speed, e.g. raising the edges of the “A”, “F”, “J” and semi-colon/colon keys.
