- With hardly any exception, all tennis players bounce the tennis ball a few times before serving.
- Some players are said to do it to get their bodies in the correct position before serving.
- While others do it to get an idea of how high the ball would bounce or travel (some balls may bounce differently).
- And some also do it because everyone else does it.
- At least that is what Andy Murray said in 2010: “I just do it because everyone else does it, not that there is any difference between the balls.”
- However, experts believe it is a way for players to buy time.
- This time could be used to ease their nerves, cool down, catch a breath, develop a tactic or frustrate the opponent, forcing them to lose focus.
- Tennis being an individual sport, there could be so much to assess, especially the conditions and the opponent.
- And players create the opportunity for this assessment by bouncing the ball a few times.
