Reading Time: < 1 minutes
  1. A hotdog is a food consisting of a grilled or steamed sausage served in the slit of a partially sliced bun.
  2. The sausage itself is also referred to as the hotdog.
  3. It is unknown how hotdog got its name, but the most accepted theory links it to the German migrants, who migrated to the US in the 1800s.
  4. When German migrants migrated to the US in the 1800s, they took meat sausages with them and soon started selling them on pushcarts.
  5. It is also believed that Germans loved the dog breed dachshund, and many people brought this breed of dog with them to the US.
  6. And because of Germans’ excessive love for the dachshund breed of dogs, their pushcarts were jokingly referred to as the dog carts or dog wagons.
  7. Instances of Germans themselves calling these sausages “dachshund sausages” have been recorded.
  8. In the beginning, sausages (hotdogs) were sold without the bread/bun.
  9. But because hotdogs were hot and greasy, one street vendor used to give gloves to the customers, so they could wear these gloves and then eat the sausage.
  10. Eventually, this vendor started receiving customers who just wanted the gloves.
  11. So, this vendor collaborated with his baker brother and replaced the gloves with the bun.
